Escape The Summer Heat

North Carolina mountain communities like Spruce Pine and Little Switzerland are a welcome retreat from the everyday summer sizzle. At Switzerland Inn (at the peak of 226A) it is typically 10 degrees cooler than the neighboring valley communities and the humidity fades away as the elevation climbs.

The twisting climb up NC 266 or NC 226A (the Diamondback) takes you from oppressive, clingy summer heat to cool mountaintop breezes, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the spacious accommodations, restaurants and shopping at Switzerland Inn.

Stop in at the Fowl Play Pub for your favorite cold one or try the new pub specialty, Diamondback Venom (4 types of rum and fruit juice…wow!).

Triumph Car VIN #1 Arrives in Little Switzerland

The very first Triumph car to roll off the assembly line will be on display at the Switzerland Inn in Little Switzerland this weekend.  VIN #1 is one of 40 vintage Triumphs that will be displayed on the Inn’s front lawn beginning at 9:00 am on Friday, June 22.

It is not unusual for the front lawn at the Switzerland Inn to be filled with vintage and performance motorcars. The Inn hosts several car club rallies each year including events for Jaguar, Porsche and other sports cars. Located at milepost 334 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, car clubs often make the Switzerland Inn their basecamp for weekends spent driving the scenic routes and back roads found in the North Carolina mountains.

VIN #1 and the other 39 vintage Triumphs will be on display Friday only at the Inn. The public is invited.

Ride your bike along the Diamondback (226A), enjoy the scenery, check out the cool cars and stay with us at the Switzerland Inn.  The Switzerland Inn has a wonderful Friday surf and turf buffet that is not to be missed.

Route 80 and Route 226A

The scenery and excellent road conditions of the Blue Ridge Parkway are no secret.  However, there are two routes to be explored off the Parkway in Western North Carolina.  Not many travelers know about this hidden treasure, but its curves and scenery are too nice to be kept a secret. NC 80 leads to the Blue Ridge Parkway in a series of hairpin turns.  Another road off the Parkway, NC 226A, is also unknown to many. Deemed too twisty by many, it has been all but abandoned by car drivers. These two routes offer everything a biker could want—good scenery and fun roads. Points of interest: The views of Lake Tahoma; the curves of NC 80 and NC 226A; views from Black Mountain Overlook, Three Knob Overlook, and Deer Lick Gap.

Blue Ridge Parkway Destinations

In western NC’s High Country region, Linville Caverns is an ideal destination for visitors of all ages.  Located on US 221 between Linville and Marion, just 4 miles south of the Parkway-Exit Parkway at Milepost 317.4. Turn left on US 221 toward Linville Falls and Marion.  The beauty, the splendor and wonders nature created inside a mountain can be found in Linville Caverns.  In the early 1800’s, a fishing expedition were amazed to see fish swimming in and out of what appeared to be solid rock.  A small opening in the mountain allowed them to enter the subterranean cave that is home to native trout in an underground stream.   Explore the wonders  of a hidden world…an immense passage, fantastic stalactites hanging down, and the arch of some grand old cathedral.  Linville Caverns was opened for public touring in 1937.  Since that time many upgrades to the pathways and lighting system have enhanced the touring experience.

Take a ride and enjoy the vast expanse of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway. Take dining with a view to the next level by partaking in a picnic lunch created especially for you by the Chalet Restaurant, at one of the breathtaking overlooks on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
